Value Stream Mapping
Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a 3-Day, hands-on program that provides participants with a visual tool that visually identifies every process in a product’s flow, giving visibility to both the value-creating steps as well as the non-value-added steps. Day 1 introduces participants to current state mapping while allowing for practice with a case study and an actual value stream within the host company. Day 2 introduces the concepts to develop a future state map while again reinforcing the process through case study and the host company process. Day 3 is a facilitated day to create a prioritized and detailed action plan to implement the future state.
This program is a mandatory course in our Lean Certification Program. The only difference is that the third day is optional.
Value Stream Mapping illustrates the current state (the current processing of a given product or service), clearly showing the process steps, from raw material, through to its delivery to the customer(internal or external). Creating a future state value stream will identify the process improvement efforts that then become focused, resulting in the elimination of wastes. This valuable tool produces some eye-opening opportunities in all processes whether product or service oriented.
This program covers the following subjects:
1. What is a Value Stream?
2. Identifying the Value Add.
3. The Current State Map (with hands-on simulation exercise).
4. The Lean Value Stream.
5. The Future State Map (with hands-on simulation exercise).
6. Generating a Future State Map.
7. Achieving the Future State (implementation with host company).
8. Implementation Summary & Conclusion.
Value Stream Mapping is conducted at a host facility, combining classroom instruction, practical hands-on mapping exercises and a full VSM implementation exercise where participants are broken into teams, with each team assigned a product family to map.
